Is Marcus usually an African American name?

I'm white and my husband is Hispanic. We are thinking about names for our unborn son..and we like the name Marcus. I was wondering if people usually associate this name with African American males?

Is Marcus usually an African American name?
I don't think so. In Australia there are many males named Marcus and they are all white. I wouldn't associate this name with African American males at all.
Reply:I don't. I see it as a Roman name, and it's the sort that I think would work well on all ethnicities.

I understand why you're asking, though. I've gotten the, "That's a black name!" reaction when I've asked about baby boy names that end in S. When I told my sister-in-law that I like Julius and Miles, she immediately said, "But you're not black!" (which I found rather rude). Maybe the S-ending names have been used more often among African-American families in certain areas, but that shouldn't stop you from using them. I personally love them.
Reply:I don't associate it with any race...

I went to school with 3 guys named Marcus, a nerd, a drama guy, and a football player. Two were white, one was hispanic...

I think it's a great name! Marc is also cute as a nickname.
Reply:It sounds like you are going for the names you favor, not ones that are "ethnic" --whatever that means.

In which case, you should not be choosing names like this. You do know that you are only enforcing stereotypes, right?
Reply:Personally I know 4 Marcus': 3 are black, 1 is white.

In my opinion when I think of Marcus I think of a black guy. But who cares? If you like the name (I personally don't) then use it! It's your baby!
Reply:It's a very common name here in Scandinavia, especially Norway and Sweden. If you like it, that should be all that matters. I think it's a nice name.
Reply:Umm I wouldn't associate to someone Black. A name is a name to me. Name your son what you like, not what people can determine by a name.
Reply:No not at all, I've known plenty of white Marcus'. I've actually never known a black person with that name.
Reply:who cares my husband's family is black they have a jamarcus.......if u liek it run with it ......this 2008 nothing is too white too hispanic etc etc
Reply:so what if it is? Its a nice name.

If you're uncomfortable with it some others are

Reply:No. It's both. It doesn't matter though. It's a nice name so just name him Marcus.
Reply:I think so. It seems like Mario would be the hispanic name for Marc.
Reply:No I don't see it as any race. I think Marcus is a nice name, go for it!*
Reply:What does it matter?
