They put continually add rings around their necks, in order to stretch them out. It's considered to be a quality of beauty.

well...they aren't African but: the women of the Burmese Padaung tribe wear brass coils around their necks in order to enlongate them (actually what happens is the rings compresses the collarbone and upper ribs making the neck appear longer. *note that because of military conflict many members of this tribe have migrated to Thailand. Oh...and another thing, it's not actually true that if they take the coils off that their neck will flop over or that they will suffocate.... (common misconception) Ah, and another tribe (South African) is the Ndebele people who start wearing neck rings when they are married, around 12 years of age. However instead of brass coils, the they wear individual rings closed around their necks.
