Mary Jackson, fantastic sweetgrass baskets!

Is Marcus usually an African American name?

I'm white and my husband is Hispanic. We are thinking about names for our unborn son..and we like the name Marcus. I was wondering if people usually associate this name with African American males?

Is Marcus usually an African American name?
I don't think so. In Australia there are many males named Marcus and they are all white. I wouldn't associate this name with African American males at all.
Reply:I don't. I see it as a Roman name, and it's the sort that I think would work well on all ethnicities.

I understand why you're asking, though. I've gotten the, "That's a black name!" reaction when I've asked about baby boy names that end in S. When I told my sister-in-law that I like Julius and Miles, she immediately said, "But you're not black!" (which I found rather rude). Maybe the S-ending names have been used more often among African-American families in certain areas, but that shouldn't stop you from using them. I personally love them.
Reply:I don't associate it with any race...

I went to school with 3 guys named Marcus, a nerd, a drama guy, and a football player. Two were white, one was hispanic...

I think it's a great name! Marc is also cute as a nickname.
Reply:It sounds like you are going for the names you favor, not ones that are "ethnic" --whatever that means.

In which case, you should not be choosing names like this. You do know that you are only enforcing stereotypes, right?
Reply:Personally I know 4 Marcus': 3 are black, 1 is white.

In my opinion when I think of Marcus I think of a black guy. But who cares? If you like the name (I personally don't) then use it! It's your baby!
Reply:It's a very common name here in Scandinavia, especially Norway and Sweden. If you like it, that should be all that matters. I think it's a nice name.
Reply:Umm I wouldn't associate to someone Black. A name is a name to me. Name your son what you like, not what people can determine by a name.
Reply:No not at all, I've known plenty of white Marcus'. I've actually never known a black person with that name.
Reply:who cares my husband's family is black they have a jamarcus.......if u liek it run with it ......this 2008 nothing is too white too hispanic etc etc
Reply:so what if it is? Its a nice name.

If you're uncomfortable with it some others are

Marquis (mar key) french

Marius Roman ithink

Reply:No. It's both. It doesn't matter though. It's a nice name so just name him Marcus.
Reply:I think so. It seems like Mario would be the hispanic name for Marc.
Reply:No I don't see it as any race. I think Marcus is a nice name, go for it!*
Reply:What does it matter?

it can be for any race.

What was that name of the African American kid?

that got killed by that white guy back in the 50's (I think) for winking or whistling at a white lady in a convenient store? Then the guy got off, and sold his story. He was like 10 I think. I was just wondering because I have to do a college paper, and I need examples of racism, I remember that story from high school.

What is the name of the european country which controlled the African Congo before WWII?

It is for a question on my daughters homework.

What is the name of the european country which controlled the African Congo before WWII?
There are two Congos: the smaller one (today's Republic of the Congo) was a colony of France. The larger one (today's Democratic Republic of the Congo) was a colony of Belgium.
Reply:i think it's belgium
Reply:French rule

The area came under French sovereignty in the 1880s. Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, a French empire builder, competed with agents of Belgian King L茅opold's International Congo Association (later Zaire) for control of the Congo River basin. King L茅opold, on February 5, 1885 established the Congo as a personal possession. Between 1882 and 1891, treaties were secured with all the main local rulers on the river's right bank, placing their lands under French protection. In 1908, France organized French Equatorial Africa (AEF), comprising its colonies of Middle Congo (modern Congo), Gabon, Chad, and Oubangui-Chari (modern Central African Republic). Brazzaville was selected as the federal capital.

Economic underdevelopment during the first 50 years of colonial rule in Congo centered on natural resource extraction by private companies. In 1924-34, the Congo-Ocean Railway (CFCO) was built at a considerable human and financial cost, opening the way for growth of the ocean port of Pointe-Noire and towns along its route.

During World War II, the AEF administration sided with Charles de Gaulle, and Brazzaville became the symbolic capital of Free France during 1940-43. The Brazzaville Conference of 1944 heralded a period of major reform in French colonial policy, including the abolition of forced labor, granting of French citizenship to colonial subjects, decentralization of certain powers, and election of local advisory assemblies. Congo benefited from the postwar expansion of colonial administrative and infrastructural spending as a result of its central geographic location within AEF and the federal capital at Brazzaville.

Is Djibouti really the ONLY African country that shares its name with its capital??

For some reason, i was bored one night in my bedroom and i decided to flick through the World Atlas, my attention turned to Africa.. i was looking at the names and suddenly came to the conclusion that djibouti and its capital are the same.. but is it really true that it is the only one??

Is Djibouti really the ONLY African country that shares its name with its capital?
Tunisia
Reply:Djibouti is TINY - less than a million people - and most of them live in the capital city, Djibouti. So that might be why. Most of the rest of the country is incredibly hot and arid - can't grow anything, etc.

Some people (many in Africa) refer to Congo and Democratic Republic of Congo as Congo-Brazzaville and Congo-Kinshasa, so you could say that those are also called by their capital names.
Reply:It's not the only one. There's Tunisia for example. It's the only one else I know actually :) .

Not a good idea to name an African American Jackson?

What would you think of a white person who names an African American baby Jackson?

Would you think it was an inappropriate choice for a first name?

I am worried about people making a link to President Andrew Jackson, who wasn't the most open-minded person when it came to non-white races.

Not a good idea to name an African American Jackson?
I personally like the name Jackson... but if you feel like people will criticize you about the name, then don't name the baby Jackson. Good luck and God bless :)
Reply:I think it's a nice name and race shouldn't be an issue.

It's a great name, i know 2 black Jacksons and 4 white ones.

it's an english name, and i love the name Jackson for any ethnicity.

Reply:I think Jackson is a cute name.

If I was you I wouldn't be worried about President Jackson, I'd be worried about MICHAEL Jackson causing troubles in that department. That's just me though. And don't get me wrong, Michael Jackson is like a musical genius... he just hasn't err... made the best decisions.

Good Luck.
Reply:I wouldn't have even thought of that.

Its a popular name and is appropriate for any race.

Now if it was something like Adolf on a little Jewish boy, I would say inappropriate, but that is a historical mark you don't want to touch.

Someone like Jackson, I don't think anyone would make the association, IMHO.
Reply:Congrats on the new baby! Jackson is a great first name, and believe me, Americans aren't that smart about their presidents. They're not going to think about any past presidents. Andrew Jackson isn't one of the most talked about in schools. Lincoln, Washington, Roosevelt..

Have fun with your baby! Name him whatever you want! :)
Reply:I think you're way off base. Very few people think about the president Andrew Jackson when they hear the name Jackson. And probably even fewer people think of racism even if Andrew Jackson does cross their mind. After all, there's Rev. Jesse Jackson and Michael Jackson (and all his siblings) that are much more recent famous people named Jackson and they also happen to be African American. Most people just think, "oh, that's a popular boy's name."
Reply:In the Army, Fort Jackson is called "Relaxin' Jackson" because they don't train as well or as hard as other units.

...not a good choice for an African-American male simply because of racial stereotyping (it's not right or acceptable but it does exist).

Can someone name off a couple of African American female Christian singers?

I am desperately trying to find a song. The words won't come to me but maybe if I have the name I'll figure it out. I'm thinking of a "big-boned" African American woman with short black hair.

The video I remember is when she's inside, singing about the rain, then it clears (I think) and she goes outside and everything is green and beautiful with trees and leaves and such. She's a famous singer, btw.

Please name off any that you know!

Do you think the last name Mitchell is from an ancestor who was african american?

I am trying to find out the history of my family tree.

Do you think the last name Mitchell is from an ancestor who was african american?
African Americans were given the names of their slaveowners. Thus AA's in America do not have a real "heritage" when it comes to namesake. Many took the names of presidents at the time to make themselves seem important: Jackson, Jefferson, Washington and so on.....

Malcolm Small became Malcolm X because he no longer wanted to bear the name of the slave Master. Cassius Clay took the name Muhammid Ali for the same reason. Today people don't make that big of a deal but if you are looking for family tree then you will probably find white heritage in general. You could do genetic testing if you want to find out if you have any African blood. The Genome project on the National Geographic website is great I did it and found out I have DNA from Northern Africa. I am African American. Good luck and God Bless.
Reply:The only way to find out would be to trace it. Like "Jackson", "Johnson", "White", "Black", "Green", "Carpenter", "Baker", "Pack" and a gazillion other surnames, some people with it are black and some are white. Some of them are Eurasian, too.

How do you trace your family tree? Good question. Here is my stock answer.

This is a text file I paste to questions like yours. People ask similar questions 3 - 14 times a day here. You get a long, detailed answer, I don't get finger cramps. It is long because there are over 400,000 free genealogy sites.

It is also long because researching your family tree is as hard as writing a term paper in a History class. You don't have to be a rocket scientist, but you won't do it with five clicks. I could tell you everything I know in 30 minutes, but not 3. The fact you have to do research stops nine out of ten teens and many adults.

If you didn't mention a country, we can't tell if you are in the USA, UK, Canada or Australia. I'm in the USA and my links are for it. If you are not, please edit your question to add a country. Genealogists from the UK answer posts here too. They are more experienced and more intelligent than I am. I'm better looking and my jokes are better.

The really good stuff is in your parents' and grandparents' memories. No web site is going to tell you how your great grandparents decorated the Christmas tree with ornaments cut from tin foil during the depression, how Great Uncle Elmer wooed his wife with a banjo, or how Uncle John paid his way through college in the 1960's by smuggling herbs. Talk to your living relatives before it is too late.

You won't find living people on genealogy sites. Don't look for yourself or your parents.

So much for the warnings. Here are some links. These are large and free. Many of them have subtle ads for Ancestry.com in them - ads that ask for a name, then offer a trial subscription. Watch out for those advertisements.

Liza is a deity of the Fon people who live in Benin, West Africa. Liza is associated with the Sun, which is regarded by African people as fierce and harsh. Liza is depicted as male and inseparable from his partner, Mawu, who is associated with the Moon. Mawu and Liza were also regarded as twins. Their unity represented the order of the universe. Liza is said to dwell in the East, and Mawu in the West. Mawu and Liza were born from Nana Buluku, who created the world.

In a different legend, Mawu and Liza were the creators. They used their son, Gu, to shape the world. Gu, the divine tool, was in the shape of an iron sword. He taught the people the art of ironworking, so they could make their own tools and shelter. Unfortunately, Gu did not know humans would use their knowledge to make weapons. With the help of the cosmic serpent, Da, their ideas came to life.

Liza was also the god of day, heat, work and strength. Mawu was the goddess of night, fertility, rest and motherhood. When there is an eclipse, it is said that Mawu and Liza were making love.

Mawu

Mawu is the supreme creator god according to the Fon people of Abomey (Republic of Benin). Mawu represented the Moon that brings the night and cooler temperature in the African world. Mawu is depicted as an old mother who dwells in the West. Coolness is an expression of wisdom and age for the Fon people.

Mawu has a partner called Liza that is associated with the Sun. Mawu and Liza are regarded as an unseparable unity at the basis of the universal order. Together they created the universe. They used their son Gu, the divine tool, to shape the world. They were also aided by the cosmic serpent, Da. Mawu and Liza were twins.

When there is an eclipse of the Sun or the Moon, the Fon people think that Mawu and Liza are making love. Mawu and Liza are the parents of seven pairs of twins. These twins are gods with different domains. Mawu is the goddess of fertility, joy and rest. Liza is the god of day, heat and strength.

What is the common name for the african cichlid fish Ps. Elongatus?

i just got this african cichlid (malawi) from a really cool fish store and the guy said it was compadable with my others but all they had for names there was the scientific names so does anyone know the common name for it and how to pronounce the name? (you might have to do some research) thanks!

What is the common name for the african cichlid fish Ps. Elongatus?
Well Ps. Elongatus is Pseudotropheus Elongatus and is pronounced Sue Doe Trow fuss E long gate us. There is no common name that I can think of and a good point was made by the last two answers. Common names are not really a good thing. For example. Ps. Crabro's are sometimes called Bumblebee cichlids, however, some people have seen fit to also call them Hornet cichilds, which can lead to too much confusion then it's worth. I wouldn't advise you to buy on a common name if at all possible. By use of the scientific name, you can get better accurate information about whatever species you are getting and have.

Elongatus's also have a similar looking to Ps. Demasoni, and that's another reason why using common names is bad, because unless someone knows how to ID a species really well, you can too often get mislabelled fish. While it would technically apply to the scientific name as well, in terms of mis id'ing a fish, you're more likely to get a better accurate label on the fish by those that list by scientific name.

You can find decent information on care and needs at several sites.

http://www.cichlid-forum.com look under profiles, for your species Malawi/Mbuna

http://www.gcca.com

http://www.eastcoastcichlids.org

http://www.nycichlids.com

There are tons of sites out there, and I've visited as many as I can find, the ones I'm listing I have found carry better information though.
Reply:Since we need to do your research, all i can find is the scientific nme, not a common name. Like CatX says, they are usally referred to by that name, not a popular name. Besides, any so called common name will change over time.
Reply:With african cichlids, researching with the latin name is far easier than any common name. Every cichlid will have its own latin name while a common name can be applied to several. Common names are only invented by pet stores anyway! Use the latin name to research instead.
Reply:canis lupus or homo sapien (neither of which you are not)

What is the name of A South African building which is a tribute to fun?

This question has been asked twice before and the questioner was not happy with the answers. I do think that it may be Gold Reef City or Sun City. There are no buildings I can recall that was built for that specific reason. We have many statues and buildings built for other reasons rather than fun. I have also asked some of my family back in South Africa and they don't know as well.

What is the name of A South African building which is a tribute to fun?
Goldreef city (johannesburg)

Ratanga Junction (Capetown)

Flea Markets

The Mall

etc...........

etc............
Reply:uShaka Marine world in Durban, KZN. Aquarium, eatery and water world all rolled into one.
Reply:This is an entertainment resort famous across the world.

It was built by Sol Kerzner-a wealthy entrepreneur who has built many resorts across the world.

Sun City has a "Valley of Waves" which is a man-made beach and sea plus many other fun water attractions.

It is also a casino and hotel.

It stages many events as well in the "Sun City Superbowl" such as musical extravaganzas and boxing matches.

The design of the buildings is very much to do with nature. There's large statues of elephants and other wild animals indigenous to Southern Africa all over.

Is a son with an African father traditionally given an African name, regardless of Mother's heritage?

Africa has many different cultures and traditions. And I'm sure that if you look hard enough, then you can find the tradition that you are talking about.

But I doubt that each every African culture has this kind of tradition.

Is a son with an African father traditionally given an African name, regardless of Mother's heritage?
Africa is a HUGE continent with many, many different societies, tribes, cultures and religions, so it probably varies depending on the specific person's culture.
Reply:not neccessarily. It depends on the parents choice
Reply:yeah suire

actually all african children's last names are their father's names or their father's father names

the mother family names have nothing to do with the children's names

And by the way - why does the baby's race matter when chosing a name? Did you think you'd get some people who say something ignorant like "Laquisha" or "Shantifa" just because you said the baby was African-American? Or like, if you specified Caucasian, people would say "Brittney" or "Caitlin"?

Race doesnt matter! A baby is a beautiful thing no matter what color her skin is. And you should name her whatever wonderful name you see fit when you see her little face for the first time.

Reply:African American with hispanic ethnicity..

THIS IS THE OFFICIAL TERM ON THE BOOKS IN THE U.S. CENSUS ..So nobody better give me a thumbs down..Latino is an ethnicity, Black is a RACE..So there is no point in looking at any other answers. You are BLACK , if you identify with latin culture you are ALSO hispanic. If you have a problem with it take it up with the U.S. census, not me..
Reply:your Latino if you look like your Latino you are no offense but everyone looking for a reason to be black to they can say the N WORD

Help I need an african name for a Rhodesian Ridgeback!?
"Khoikhoi" or "Simba Inja" in Ndebele or "Shumba Imbwa" in Shona (which both mean African Lion Dog). The Rhodesian Ridgeback dog is presently the only registered breed indigenous to Southern Africa. Its European forebears can be traced to the early pioneers of the Cape Colony of southern Africa where they crossed with the semi-domesticated, ridged hunting dogs of the Khoisan people (native name - "Khoikhoi")

Who was the first Black or African American president and what was his name?

When was he born and for how long did he serve as president?

Who was the first Black or African American president and what was his name?
In the Warren G. Harding biography, The Shadow Of Blooming Grove, there is substantial claim and proof that Mr. Harding was of some African-American blood, perhaps 1/4. This was not betrayed by his physical characteristics, having a dark complexion, among other features. This was not a big secret in and around Blooming Grove, Ohio, his birthplace. Kidded and ridiculed as a kid and young man about this, he went out of his way his whole life to please people, which endeared him to many. The book title comes from this "shadow" that haunted him his entire life. Harding was born in 1865, elected President as a compromise candidate in 1920. Served from 1921 to 1923, when he died in office. Regarded by most as a terrible President, but died before he could defend himself of the scandals in his administration.

Reply:Haha Snoop Dogg that was funny man...

Hun, wake up to reality!!!!

Maybe we'll have one next year, 'cause one black guy is running up for the next elections, I hope he wins but I doubt it, there're still millions of racists. If he does he'll be the first African American president. The guys' name is Barack Obama, he's a democrat.

Hilary Clinton is also running up, so if she wins she'll be the first woman.

Reply:There has never been a African American President in the United States.
Reply:Sorry, there has never been a black president.
Reply:Black or African American president of WHAT? And what would make you assume it was a "him"?
Reply:Huh?... My GOD... you have no knowledge of history at all, do you. Don't the schools teach that America has NEVER had a Black President?
Reply:Warren Harding was thought to have some African-American blood. Seriously. He served from 1921 to 1923, when he died in office. All during his life, this rumor, which he did not deny, "shadowed" him, and family and friends ridiculed him, often not behind has back. Thus the title of the book.
Reply:There never has been one.
Reply:Please tell me that you're not THAT uneducated if you're talking about the President of the United States.

Please, god, please don't tell me that you know THAT little about our history.

There has never been one as of this year.
Reply:... the next president of the united states will be a black muslim lesbian!!...

eerr i mean.. no there has never been a black president of the united states.. i seriously seriously doubt that there ever will be as long as i live... and i am only in my 20s
Reply:No. Our White schools does NOT teach this!. George Washington was not the first President of the United States. In fact, the first President of the United States was one John Hanson. Don't go checking the encyclopedia for this guy's name - he is one of those great men that are lost to history. If you're extremely lucky, you may actually find a brief mention of his name.

The new country was actually formed on March 1, 1781 with the adoption of The Articles of Confederation.

This document was actually proposed on June 11, 1776, but not agreed upon by Congress until November 15, 1777. Maryland refused to sign this document until Virginia and New York ceded their western lands (Maryland was afraid that these states would gain too much power in the new government from such large amounts of land).

Once the signing took place in 1781, a President was needed to run the country. John Hanson was chosen unanimously by Congress (which included George Washington). In fact, all the other potential candidates refused to run against him, as he was a major player in the revolution and an extremely influential member of Congress.

As the first President, Hanson had quite the shoes to fill. No one had ever been President and the role was poorly defined. His actions in office would set precedent for all future Presidents.

He took office just as the Revolutionary War ended. Almost immediately, the troops demanded to be paid. As would be expected after any long war, there were no funds to meet the salaries. As a result, the soldiers threatened to overthrow the new government and put Washington on the throne as a monarch.

All the members of Congress ran for their lives, leaving Hanson as the only guy left running the government. He somehow managed to calm the troops down and hold the country together. If he had failed, the government would have fallen almost immediately and everyone would have been bowing to King Washington. In fact, Hanson sent 800 pounds of sterling siliver by his brother Samuel Hanson to George Wasington to provide the troops with shoes.

Hanson, as President, ordered all foreign troops off American soil, as well as the removal of all foreign flags. This was quite the feat, considering the fact that so many European countries had a stake in the United States since the days following Columbus.

Hanson established the Great Seal of the United States, which all Presidents have since been required to use on all official documents.

President Hanson also established the first Treasury Department, the first Secretary of War, and the first Foreign Affairs Department.

Lastly, he declared that the fourth Thursday of every November was to be Thanksgiving Day, which is still true today.

The Articles of Confederation only allowed a President to serve a one year term during any three year period, so Hanson actually accomplished quite a bit in such little time

Why is it important to study African American History? Name three reasons.?

Because African American history is American history. It is why we had a civil war. With as far as we have come, there is still racist views about African-Americans. They are a people who fought for the right to be free from tyranny and slavery and deserve our respect, same as Native Americans(whom of which still live in tremendous poverty, because of our government's thumb) or any other "race". And lastly, because it is important to know more about where they came from and how they have contributed to your way of life.

Why is it important to study African American History? Name three reasons.?
#1 They are forced to study American history, and a lot of it.

#2 It is one sided if we don't do the same and study their history.

#3 Maybe there would be less racists in the world.
Reply:1. How they came to America.

2. What they contributed to America.

3. What they think of America.

What is the name of the law that allowed African Americans to vote in America?

The 15th Amendment to the Constitution, proposed 2/26/1869 and ratified 2/3/1870.

It did not say that blacks must be ALLOWED to vote. The States were free to set their own rules. Rules that tried to limit voting by blacks were struck down by the Supreme Court, federal and State laws and the 24th Amendment which outlawed poll taxes in Federal or State elections.

What is the name of the law that allowed African Americans to vote in America?
The 15th amendment, giving all freedmen(slaves) civil rights, such as to vote
Reply:The 15th amendment to the constitution said states can not deny people the right to vote because of race if they met other qualifications. However in southern sates most African Americans were prevented from voting until the Federal government enforced this with the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Reply:Why, do you want to abolish it?
Reply:im pretty sure it's the three fifths rule

edit: The way the question was phrased i assumed the poster wanted to know for a history class. So my answer is legitimate. Why are you cursing me out?
Reply:Formally it was the 14th and 15th amendments to the US Constitution. Informally it was the Emancipation Proclamation.

The 3/5 compromise was actually to count black people for Southern congressional representation.
Reply:Would that be the law that allowed all men to vote. But didn't include women black or white to vote.
Reply:Person nailed it first. It was a constitutional amendment. I don't recall what #, but I'll assume he got it right. Either way, it was a consitutional amendment that gave blacks (or at least black males) the vote. Black women had to wait until 1920, when women finally got the franchise, again, via a constitutional amednment!
Reply:15 th amendment it allowed "all men" of all races to vote.
Reply:afrimative actoin
Reply:dumbass the 3/5's rule was during pre civil war times where the south wanted more representation in congress so they agreed to let their slaves count for 3/5's of a person toward population representation. Know what you are answering before you answer.
