How many African countries can you name?

Literally from memory, without googling or looking at a map of any kind (even a blank one):

Morocco

Western Sahara

Algeria

Tunisia

Libya

Egypt

Sudan

Chad

Niger

Mali

Mauritania

Guinea

Guinea-Bissau

Equatorial Guinea

Gabon

The Gambia

Liberia

Ghana

Burkina Faso

Cote D'Ivoire

Congo (Republic of)

Sao Tome %26amp; Principe

Tanzania

Kenya

Mozambique

Zambia

Zimbabwe

Angola

South Africa

Lesotho

Swaziland (for a total of 44 + 1 territory (Western Sahara))

(Countries that are often grouped with Africa but aren't always considered part of the continent:

Madagascar

Comoros

Seychelles (for a total of 47 + 1 territory)

How many African countries can you name?
Most the above, though I'd spell correctly:

Morocco

Cameroon

Mozambique

Madagascar

Malawi

Mali

(I'm spotting a problem with 'M's ;-)

Somalia

Mauritania

Namibia

Zambia

Zimbabwe

In English, "Ivory Coast" is more commonly used than "Cote d'Ivoire", possibly because doing circumflexes is hard on EN keyboards :-)

Congo-Kinshasa is normally called the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, or just Congo. Congo-Brazzaville is so called to distinguish it from its larger neighbour. Similar with the Guinea(-Conakry) %26amp; Guinea-Bissau

Western Sahara is not (as yet) a country, but a disputed territory. It was a Spanish colony, but in 1975 Spain pulled out. It was invaded by Morocco and Mauritania, both resisted by the local Polisario fighters. They pushed out Mauritania, but not Morocco. At present there is a stalled peace process to decide its future status. Most significantly, it's not recognised as being part of Morocco or any other nation.

There are also two self-proclaimed, but still unrecognised, countries in East Africa: Somaliland and Puntland. They seceded from Somalia when its central government broke down.

Comoros, Seychelles and Mauritius are in the Indian Ocean, so are arguably not part of Africa. However, so is Madagascar, which tends to regard itself as African. AFAIK all are members of the African Union. Cape Verde and Sao Tome %26amp; Principe, off West Africa, regard themselves as African.

North Africa also contains some small Spanish territories, such as Ceuta and Melilla.

All from memory!

Edit:

OK, the above post disappeared. Here goes:

South Africa

When will O-boy name an African American to his cabinet?

Probably won't. Only Republicans do that. It amazes me, how minorities vote Democrat, yet Republicans are the only ones that put minorities in positions of power when elected. Mr Bush had the most diverse cabinet ever seated. Look at Mr Clinton's. oops, that's right, Obama is nominating an AG named Token, my bad.

When will O-boy name an African American to his cabinet?
First of all Obama is Half white.

Beyond that, I would like to think that he will appoint the best candidate for each job, and not be immersed in the colour issue,as you are presenting yourself. Martin Luther King JR. said that he looked forward to a time when his children were not judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character.

I think it sad that a Canadian has to remind you of that fact.
Reply: Why does he need to name an Africian American boy to is cabinet he was born in Kenya anyway and is an African American boy? His Kenyan brith was just covered up.
Reply:I am not an Obama fan, but I think he did already, the Attorney General. Whatever the situation, you have to speak the truth.
Reply:Ummm...well, he already has one as AG. Why? What's the point of this question? I don't know how many people would be wondering when John McCain named a white person to his cabinet if he had won so...
Reply:Is this a serious question?

Eric Holder is African-American.

You're just pulling our legs, right? You knew that?

Or did you?
Reply:I wasn't aware that that was a rule. I thought the president could hire who ever he thought would be best for the job. Didn't know they had to be a certain race.

What would be a good african-american name?

please, I don't mean to be offensive, but I have a project I need to do in class where you pretend to be a slave and write 4 paragraphs on who I am, how I escaped, how the Underground Railroad journy was, etc. I'm only 11 years old, and I'm sorry if I've offended anybody.

P.S. it's in the 1850s or so, so you can be more creative.

What would be a good african-american name?
Your question was justified and well put, no need to feel you've offended anyone.

Actually I would suggest that you keep it simple. No last name, BTW. Many slaves took the last name of their owners when they were freed (in 1863) but they didn't have birth certificates nor official names.

If your character is a boy/man-- Joe, Sam, Jake works

If your character is a girl/woman-- Sal, Mary, Susie would work.

Remember that the slaves were named by their owners, therefore they used basic names.

The slaves COULD have a given name by their parents to reflect their true heritage, but it would be kept secret, though the slave would know it, and perhaps treasure it.

But 1850 the origins of the slaves in America was Born In America. The import of new slaves had long since been stopped so Most of them, certainly all the young, were born here and didn't know anything about their heritage. THEY were taught by their parents however, and it would be a good thing to keep in mind even if you can't put it in your essay.
Reply:why don't you use your real name and tell your teacher that you had an african name and when you were brought here your slaveowner changed it so it's your "slave name"
Reply:IF U SEARCH "BLACK NAMES FROM THE 1800s " u'll find stuff. and since ur 11, u should have enough sense to know not to reveal your age online!

Reply:Slavery names were not African at all. They were a lot like pet names. I'm black so I'm not offended at all. Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriett Beecher Stowe is a good book about slavery and the Underground Railroad.

What is the name of the african bird?

I think its a fiction bird that always looks back at the past but know where its going in the future while it flies 10 POINTS!!!!!

What is the name of the african bird?
The Sanfoka Bird

SANKOFA is derived from the words SAN (return), KO (go), FA (look, seek and take). This symbolizes the Akan's quest for knowledge with the implication that the quest is based on critical examination, and intelligent and patient investigation. The symbol is based on a mythical bird that flies forwards with its head turned backwards. This reflects the Akan belief that the past serves as a guide for planning the future, or the wisdom in learning from the past in building the future. The Akan believe that there must be movement with times but as the forward march proceeds, the gems must be picked from behind and carried forward on the march. In the Akan military system, this symbol signified the rearguard, the section on which the survival of the society and the defense of its heritage depended.

Why do so many african americans have the last name Jackson?

They had the choice to take any name they wanted. So they took Presidential names. Jackson, Washington, Jefferson, etc.

"Research has shown that slave owners seldom named newborn slave children. Similarities in naming practices among African Americans in the United States and those in western Africa indicate that it is more likely that the slaves chose the names of their children. The given name of a child, therefore, showed important connections between African American families. There appears to have been a significant tendency toward the maternal line when the mother was alone, but when both parents were present, children were named after the maternal and paternal lines in nearly equal numbers.

In summary, the assumption that African Americans used the same surnames as their owners is not always true. William Still鈥檚 book on the Underground Railroad shows that, of the first 210 successful runaways, 84 percent had different surnames than the owners they had fled; this is equally true for men and women.

While runaways may not have been typical of the general population of African Americans, records from as early as 1720 indicate that slaves often had surnames different than their owners鈥?names. Certainly, post-Civil War records document that ex-slaves had surnames different than the names of their most recent owners; it is possible many ex-slaves chose new names and identifications when they were emancipated."

http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library/ar...

"We hope to connect families who share a common male ancestor. Also, because of the uniqueness of African American slaves adopting any surname of choice upon emancipation, any male with a different surname and suspects a connection to the WELLS surname is welcome to participate in this project. Ever wonder if you are connected to another family of a different surname? "

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Well...

"African-American Names

Identification of blacks in genealogical records is difficult because the African names of slaves were largely disregarded. Blacks were usually given only American first names. In Connecticut, a man's wife and children often took his given name as their surname. For example, the sons of Primus Richards were known as George and Henry Primus. In the Records and Papers of the First Congregational Church, Hartford, blacks are listed in the index as "Negroes". There are no individual name listings, and slaves were often listed under the slave-owners' names (i.e., "Myers, Miers, Negroes of") with no identification of the person by name.

When slaves escaped to the North or were freed, they adopted surnames. Some slaves took surnames prior to being freed, but generally kept the name a secret from the white community. It is a common misconception that freed slaves took the surnames of their last owner. In fact, slaves often went by several surnames and made a final choice at the time they were emancipated or gained freedom. They often took the surname of their father, who may have been a white slave-master or overseer. Or, they took the name of a current owner, a former owner, a famous American, or a locally-prominent citizen."

http://www.cslib.org/blagen.htm

Why do so many african americans have the last name Jackson?
careful scruttiny on the word "jackson" means two word.... Going back on how people of the olden times on how they name their family is so far very laborious to happen. instead, we have to look verydeeply on the behavior or miggration and colonization that happened during the early settlement history of america. It is true that Blacks were prolific breed of people... People used Jackson ( meaning the son of jack) to the numerous siblings of jack. and same as Christopherson for the son of Christopher, Michaelson for michael's son and etc. these were probably the most precise asnwer to your querries.....
Reply:Most people who answered this question are wrong.

Undoubtedly there were slave owners named "Jackson," but that's not the reason.

Slaves didn't have surnames. Upon emancipation, they needed legal first and last names. There were two common practices. Some would take the last names of their former masters. Others would take the names of famous Americans, especially presidents. Occasionally, a name might just be made up because the sound of it appealed to the person in question. If you could just pick your name, you may base it on someone you know or something you just happen to like.

That's why there are many black Washingtons, Jeffersons, and Jacksons. Washington, Jefferson, and Jackson were perhaps the most well-known American presidents by 1865. (Lincoln was popular among some, but still a very controversial figure at the time.)

I don't think this question is "racist." It's a legitimate question based on a real observation. And it's also a way to talk about the history of slavery in the United States. There's nothing wrong with some learnin'.
Reply:because, Master Jackson had so many enslaved Africans, and him and his relatives where often in the women's quarter's, the reason for so many light skinned ,mix blood African Americans.
Reply:What the hell is an "african american"? That place you call Africa or America is just political boundaries that are made up. There isn't a kind of person. And what did a name really ever tell us about something? I don't just mean "a rose by any other name" crap, I also mean no two parts of a kind are exactly alike. No two leaves are the same, no two faces, no two snowflakes, etc.
Reply:It was probably a common name for slave owners. Slaves took the slave owners last name as theirs. That's my belief and I'm sticking to it!
Reply:I don't know. As a guess, there were lots of slaveowners with that last name. Slaveowners gave slaves their last names.

May God bless you.
Reply:It started because President Jackson was a slave owner, had sex with his slaves, and they took his name. Alot of african american names are slave owner's names, such as Johnson. That is why Malcolm changed his name to X, signifying his emancipation from slave history.
Reply:My cousin is Michael Jackson. ( native American)

(makes you wonder?)
Reply:Slave owners were Jackson.Dumb racist question, were not living in those times. My ancestor were English and they owned many slaves, and im from the south but i dont ask those reckless questions. Have some ettiquette.

Name 5 good African countries making progress economically?
Africa has seen some of the fastest growing economies in the world, but also some of the slowest, including several in decline. Angola, bolstered by oil fields, is the 3rd fastest-growing economy in the world. This contrasts with Zimbabwe, which is experiencing a precipitous decline. Oil in Africa has created "wealth spots" where a few countries have exceeded their neighbors in wealth. Three of the world's ten fastest-growing economies were African, with some having been at time the fastest-growing in the world. Equatorial Guinea, for example, reached 75% growth in 2004 because of oil production.

Angola 16.30% 4 1

Eq.Guinea 12.40% 6 2

Muhammad Ali's name before he changed it was Cassius Clay, apparently from an ancestor who was a slave, but Clay is obviously a fairly widespread name without slave connections in most cases, you will have to research your family history to find out for sure, you cannot guess at it.

Edit :

Clay: origins %26amp; meanings:

English: from Old English cl牵g 鈥榗lay鈥? applied as a topographic name for someone who lived in an area of clay soil or as a metonymic occupational name for a worker in a clay pit (see Clayman).

Americanized spelling of German Klee.

The relatively common English name Clay had several American forebears in the 18th century. Henry Clay, born in Hanover, VA, in 1777, secretary of state for President John Quincy Adams, was descended from English ancestors who came to VA shortly after the founding of Jamestown. The revolutionary war officer Joseph Clay, also a member of the Continental Congress, was a native of Yorkshire, England, who emigrated to GA in 1760 and was a founder of the University of Georgia.

Correction : Muhammad Ali was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He was named after his father, Cassius Marcellus Clay Sr., who was named for the 19th century abolitionist and politician Cassius Clay.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Al...
Reply:Clay is probably British or something like that... many British names are nouns like that. Perhaps the African-American part of your family, way back when, took the name of their masters? (Or were forced to take it, maybe?)

I'm not very good with slave history, though I try to raise awareness of modern-day slavery.

Aaaaanyway, yeah, Clay sounds more like a colonial name to me.
Reply:Cassius Clay was a plantation owner turned Abolitionist. His plantation was in either Lexington or Richmond Kentucky. If I were looking for any information on a black ancestor named Clay I would begin there. Some of the Clays in that area probably took the name after the civil war in gratitude. But many of them had been freed by Clay. The last site under sources is information about John Clay, b. 1824. He's an ancestor of Mohammed Ali. This would be a place to start. Good luck.
Reply:I have fun tweaking ancestry.com... so, in the 1880 census, you have the first census where a person's place of birth, AND of their parents is shown. It also happens to be 15 yrs after the Civil war ended.

So, ancestry tells me that 4,641 persons with the name Clay, were Black. Those from Southern states are very likely to have been former slaves. 10 of those actually say that their father was born in Africa.

What can I say... I am on a statistic rampage today. *smile* That should intrigue you into tracing your actual ancestors.

oh, 7477 of persons with the name were White.

edit-

with all respect.. you would start with yourself, then work backwards, and see where it leads. There were Clays in many places other than Kentucky.
Reply:There really weren't any specific slave names. The slaves brought from Africa didn't have surnames(afterall most did not have one in Europe until the last melennium). When they were freed, frequently they took the name of their former owner.
Reply:Well, I know a few Clays who aren't African-American, so I don't think it is a slave name.

What is the name of the African Kingdom or civilization...?

2.) What is it called in the original language in which the builders built it?

Bonus1:What mythical figure is connected to it/ Who is perported to have built it/ Who was it dedicated to?

Bonus2: Approximately how old is it?

Whoever can answer the most of my questions winz!

Stumped ;) , no one's getting even two of my questions right.

What is the name of the African Kingdom or civilization...?
There is the stone structure 'Zimbabwe' in the country with the same name. . .matter of fact that is where the country's name came from, formerly it was Southern Rhodesia

Presently Shona is spoken there, however, since they did not have a recorded language one must assume that today's language is a derivative of the ancient.

The mythical figure is a bird, looking like a falcon, the emblem is carved on a rock above the entrance to the structure.

It is the greatest Medievil city in sub-Saharan Africa dating back to the eleventh century. Estimated to have had 10,000 to 20,000 inhabitants. It was a religious and temporal capital. The name is believed to come from Shona words: dzimba dza mabwe(great stone houses). The culture who build it is known as Rozwi culture. They grew rich from gold trade with the Swahili from the north and along the east coast of Africa with Arab traders. They became a victum of their own success, by the 15th century they have depleted their resources. When the Portuguese arrived in the 16th century, the city was vertually depleted. There is evidence that the ancients were smelting iron and making weapons.

One more is the great mosque of Djenne in Mali West Africa. It is credited with being the largest mud brick building in the world(been there done that seen that). This mosque was rebuilt in 1905 based on the same design and size as the previous dating back to the 11th century. In Mali they speak Bambara and also French since it was once a colony of France

Of course, the vast majority of entrepreneurs -- all sexes and races -- are small business-owners, and thus not well-known.

There's an old, old song (40's?) called "Civilization," sung by a long-gone comedian named Danny Kaye with the lyrics

"Bongo, bongo I don't want to leave the Congo

Oh no no no no no

Bingle, bangle, bungle I'm so happy in the jungle I refuse to go .."

Also, there's a song by Paul Simon song on his "Graceland" album from about 20 years ago called "Under African Skies."

Bob Hope and Bing Crosby made a series of "Road" pictures back in the 40's, with a song from one called "We're off on the road to Morocco," that became one of their biggest hits.

And there's a very famous opera, Aida, by Verdi, set in Egypt with characters from Ethiopia, with plenty of references to both countries in the lyrics.

And if you're still thinking about Asia, there's a song sung by Ricky Nelson (teen idol of the 50's) called "Travelin' Man," that mentions Hong Kong in the lyrics.

Reply:Knobkierie

A Knobkierie, occasionally spelled knopkierie or knobkerry, is a strong, short wooden club with a heavy rounded knob or head on one end, traditionally used by Southern African tribes (e.g. Zulu) as a weapon in warfare and the chase. The word Knobkerrie derives from the Dutch knop (knob or button), and the Bushman and Hottentot kerrie=kirri (stick).

It is employed at close quarters, or as a missile, and in time of peace serves as a walking-stick. The head, or knob, is often ornately carved with faces or shapes that have symbolic meaning. The knobkierie itself serves this function in the crest of the 2000 new federal coat of Arms of South Africa.

The name has been extended to similar weapons used by the natives of Australia, the Pacific islands and other places.

Reply:Nailah is very pretty, go with that one
Reply:Definately not marjani, its too african. Nailah is very nice - still african but not overly so. Research shows that people with names that are too african wind up having lower incomes when older due to their names. Its unfortunate but true.
Reply:Nailah is beautiful
Reply:Na'ila (pronounced na-aye-la) is a very popular girl baby name in South Asia. It has a very nice meaning as well - it means achiever.
Reply:I personally like Nailah, because it seems so original, and pretty. Marjani is okay to, but in my opinion it kind of sounds like Margie.

Reply:Yes! I love the name Gavin. If the husband donsen't aggree try using it as a middle name.
Reply:ADORABLE!! i love it :)
Reply:I really don't like the nam Gavin. No offense or anything. Sorry! So I don't think it's cute in general. I don't think that there are "black names" or "white names".

Name your baby the name you want, no matter what your race is.
Reply:I think its cute!

Like Gavin Thomas or something like that.
Reply:Gavin is a wonderful name regardless of race. I'm African American and I'd name my son that but everybody is different. If your heart is set on it, work on your husband and I'm sure the two of you can think of something that satisfies both your ideas. Good luck!!!
Reply:i like gavin for african americans. i think it fits. caucasian americans have gavin as a name, and its goes well, but i like gavin for african americans better.
Reply:noooooooo
Reply:Nope. It's a Welsh name (Gawain is a variant of it). However, don't let me stop you! Use the name you both love.
Reply:i think it is a cute name but think of the name when he gets older would people take him seriously?
Reply:I never understood why name has to correspond to race. Go for it. Most typically African American names are just variants of Anglo or French names anyway.
Reply:I think Gavin is a great name for an African American boy, why not? Who says the name has to be traditionally 'ethnic'. Your boy will stand out as having a unique name.
Reply:very cute
Reply:i like that name

its cute
Reply:I like old names like Gavin, I think that it would be perfect!
Reply:Hmmmm, it's a tough one, i would say it would be great but u might want to give it a little accent maybe so people could understand =)!!
Reply:Yes it is and its a neutrual name it can be a boy or a girl name!
Reply:i think it would be an ok name if it was the middle name like

I am going to start selling african art and I need a original domain/company name?

I am looking to open a African art store and I am looking for a Domain/Company name that is original and catchy. I am looking for something that is NOT taken i.e. (africanart.com, artofafrica.com)

So let us see what you can come up with.

I am going to start selling african art and I need a original domain/company name?
The naming of your business could be one of the most important decisions you will make. A name's originality and legal availability will create a real asset value of its own, as it becomes marketed and gains market acceptance.

The name you choose will become the focal point of all the benefits and features that relate to your product or business. Customers will be able to find and refer others to it in the future.

Established products or businesses realize the value of customer good will. A well chosen name will provide an extra marketing advantage, that may mean the difference between failure and success.

Companies go to great lengths to trademark and protect the usage of their name.

That being said, I suggest either hiring a name creation firm or get together with your friends and throw a "name party." Bring some of your items to the party %26amp; have everyone bounce some ideas around. Compile a listing of names that you like the best. Once you have that list, do as much free research as you can before you delve into comprehensive research. I listed some links to search names in the source box.

Best of luck to you!
Reply:You're welcome! I wish you much success %26amp; happiness in all your ventures! Report Abuse

Reply:www.africanlifeart.com or how about www.afrikaansart.com or just take out the 's' in afrikaans. its the scientific name for africans. hope it helps a little.

When I moved to UK, I found out that china (as in howzit my china) is actually cockney.

China plate rhymes with best mate.

So someone is you're best china (plate) their you're best mate.

I always wondered why calling someone Chinese meant their you're friend.

Some more of my favorites are:

Kak man- my European housemates always giggle when I say this, cause it's similar in most European languages (Hungarians say Koko etc)

Vrot- Doesn't this word just ooze with imagery, it is so descriptive. Vrrrot!

Jebo yes- Always brings a smile to someones face.

And of course my favorite, Howzit!

When my European housemates ask me, how do you say hello in a country with 11 languages?

I always reply, Howzit, one greeting for one nation, cause despite our differences, we have one thing in common, we are all God's people.
Reply:Ja/Nee Swaer
Reply:1. Benaai-mostly used in londen by all th south africans

2. Leka

3. Proudly, lol

4. Souties

Moja majimbos.
Reply:My husband just told me that I often use the word "goggas" for bugs (left over from my South Africa days) and we sometimes refer to the barbeque as a "braai" when it is only us at home -although my children think we are mad as both my husband and I are born Americans, yet feel a connection to South Africa to the degree that we still throw in South African slang (the bit that we know and remember) into our private talks. The words I remember fondly are: bakkies, robot and koppie. And do you still use the word "shame" so much?
