What is the common name for the african cichlid fish Ps. Elongatus?

i just got this african cichlid (malawi) from a really cool fish store and the guy said it was compadable with my others but all they had for names there was the scientific names so does anyone know the common name for it and how to pronounce the name? (you might have to do some research) thanks!

What is the common name for the african cichlid fish Ps. Elongatus?
Well Ps. Elongatus is Pseudotropheus Elongatus and is pronounced Sue Doe Trow fuss E long gate us. There is no common name that I can think of and a good point was made by the last two answers. Common names are not really a good thing. For example. Ps. Crabro's are sometimes called Bumblebee cichlids, however, some people have seen fit to also call them Hornet cichilds, which can lead to too much confusion then it's worth. I wouldn't advise you to buy on a common name if at all possible. By use of the scientific name, you can get better accurate information about whatever species you are getting and have.

Elongatus's also have a similar looking to Ps. Demasoni, and that's another reason why using common names is bad, because unless someone knows how to ID a species really well, you can too often get mislabelled fish. While it would technically apply to the scientific name as well, in terms of mis id'ing a fish, you're more likely to get a better accurate label on the fish by those that list by scientific name.

You can find decent information on care and needs at several sites.

There are tons of sites out there, and I've visited as many as I can find, the ones I'm listing I have found carry better information though.
Reply:Since we need to do your research, all i can find is the scientific nme, not a common name. Like CatX says, they are usally referred to by that name, not a popular name. Besides, any so called common name will change over time.
Reply:With african cichlids, researching with the latin name is far easier than any common name. Every cichlid will have its own latin name while a common name can be applied to several. Common names are only invented by pet stores anyway! Use the latin name to research instead.
Reply:canis lupus or homo sapien (neither of which you are not)
