Would you say that the name Monique in this country is an African American name?

Would it be wrong for a white girl (non French). Thanks.

Would you say that the name Monique in this country is an African American name?
Names are names, it's a free country ANYONE can use them. I've met a white guy named Tyrone before and I've met a Hispanic girl named Latoya...what is the difference? Name your daughter whatever you like!!!!
Reply:No I like that name it's unique.
Reply:Monique can be used for any little girl, it isn't limited to one race. The only Monique I ever met was Puertorican so it's definitely not specifically "African American", it's just a name and you can name your child anything you like from any culture or language or origin you choose. If you like how it sounds then just use it....society has nothing to say about what you name your baby
Reply:I named my girl Erin and I'm not Irish.

Why not?
Reply:No, I know several mexican girls with that nake and one white girl. I don't think I know a black girl with that name. I think it would be a very pretty name for a white girl.
Reply:It's french. Wtf?
Reply:Hmmm ... there is, of course, Mo'Nique, the actress and comedienne. But my first thought was Monique Lhuillier, the wedding gown designer.

I guess I'd say this: it's not the kind of name I expect to hear called out at a suburban shopping mall. ("Monique, put your sneakers on now, or we will not go to Build-A-Bear Workshop today!") But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

The name is generally declining in popularity - it was 655th on The Top 1000 last year. It hasn't been that high up since the late 1950s. So I doubt your daughter will meet many other Moniques her age - black, white or otherwise.
Reply:No more than Siobhan, Donovan or Denzel -- all traditional Celtic names popular in the African American community. But I wouldn't ever assume ethnicity (short of perhaps "Irish" or "French," as the case may be LOL) based on such a name.

An actual African name, like Eniola or Imani, certainly. But I'd never think a name an "African American" choice in the least. More than likely, I'd assume Caucasian "Monique" had some French heritage, or perhaps had French Canadian or Louisiana roots. ;) And honestly ... no one would be likely to know any differently, unless you go around introducing her as "non-French, non-African-American Monique." ;)
Reply:for everyone else she wasnt trying to be racist so shutup, although i did think of an african american girl when i read the name.
Reply:.....?

Not trying to be rude...but...

we're in 2007.

[[[If you like the name, you like the name.]]]]

If you MUST know, the only Monique I know in real life is white/portuguese.

Remember, 2007.
Reply:I think it would be fine to name your child Monique.
Reply:no name is "wrong"...certain races don't have "dibs" on the names or anything.

to me, monique is a stereotypical type of arfrican american name, but it's very cute, so if you like it, go for it!
Reply:I don't think of Monique as an African American name. I know that there is the show Monique starring an African American girl, but as for the name, I think that it is a name that could be used for anybody of any race. It wouldn't be wrong at all. Go for it!
Reply:Id say Monique is a French name. and What difference does it make? wrong for a white girl??????? You must be from Mississippi.
Reply:I personally think of the show "Monique" in which an african american girl plays the character named monique.

However, You can choose to do what you like...
Reply:I would not think of Monique has a black or white sounding name. It is a pretty name.
Reply:No I think that the sound of it may be why your are thinking it....I think it is a very pretty and very unique (Unique Monique) name....I dont think by any means that it would be wrong to name some one Monique (or any other name) because of their skin color

it is wrong to treat people differently because of their skin color there for it is wrong to name people a different name because of their skin color, however it is defintily NOT wrong to not name someone by an african name because they are african or a spanish name because the are spanish it is more considered tradition...

if you like the name Monique (i certainly do) that go for it!!!
Reply:um it is a little african i personally don't think it's a great name to fit on a white girl.

no offense! i've just always heard the name monique for a black girls name.
Reply:Every Monique I have met has been black. Since it is originally a French name and French are white, there is no rule anywhere that says you can't give that name to a white non-French girl.
Reply:i had 3 girls african-american girls in my university named Monique.
