George Washington Carver is my favorite because he was a brilliant scientist who revolutionized agriculture. He worked long and hard and he was very prolific.

He was an agriculture chemist. He discovered crops that could be used to revitalize land - instead of letting it get "farmed out" and turned to dust. He came up with a number of useful prodiucts that could be made from lots of different crops.

America might not be the kind of place it is today, the "food basket of the world" it was called in the mid-20th century, if not for some of his discoveries about farming and food.

He helped popularize a lot of foods made from peanuts. One of my favorites, peanut butter, I went out and bought at the store tonight, just because I have not had any in a long time.

One other black American that really makes me think - because of his great scientific discovery and how many lives that discovery saved so many times since.

He was a medical doctor that made an important discovery about blood. While there are a handful of different blood types and they are incompatible with other types, mostly - blood plasma (the fluid itself, without the red blood cells) is not typed.

His discovery wound up saving countless lives of people all over America and all around the world.
